Prior to the identification of Tylee Ryan and J.J. Vallow's remains on Chad Daybell's property, Janis Cox, Lori Vallow's mother, told CBS News that her daughter was not responsible for any of the accusations made against her. In a 2020 May interview with CBS News, she told,
She's invested her whole life in those children. So we know there's another whole side to this. We don't know what it is. But we know her.
Janis Cox thought Tylee and J.J. were still alive at the moment. Additionally, she claimed that she spoke with J.J. after it was reported that he had disappeared. When questioned about whether Vallow had provided any information regarding the children's whereabouts at the time, Janis stated that Vallow couldn't talk about anything because she was being held by the police.
Lori Norene Cox (later Vallow Daybell) was raised in a loving home in Southern California as the second youngest of Janis Lee Cox and Barry Lynn Cox's five children. Her mother Janis Cox referred to Lori as a child in the first episode of Sins of Our Mother, calling her just a darling little girl. Janis was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In the show, Janis explained,

The majority of the Cox family initially passionately defended Lori's innocence, but after the children's bodies were discovered on her husband's property, their opinions did shift. Janis Cox, Barry, and Summer along with a few others, stated in a statement that they had "maintained a strong hope and belief [the kids] were alive and well. With that hope and belief apparently shattered, they struggle to find comfort and hope in this potential new reality. They miss J.J. and Tylee very much… The family will continue to closely watch the developing situation and will anxiously await the pending conclusions with heavy hearts.”
