Matt McGorry was born on April 12, 1986, in Manhattan, New York. He used to perform street magic as a 9-year-old child. He did his schooling at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and graduated from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts in 2008.
Being the bodybuilder that he is, he had never been a sports-loving kid and was never athletic so, he was always excessively self-conscious about his physical build.
However, that all came to change when he was gifted training sessions with a personal prize after he won a science fair at school, and he quickly became attached with his trainer, who was not into hardcore exercises but emphasized corrective exercises and fitness.
The How to Get Away with Murder actor began powerlifting in college. He also did strength exercises after he reached 220 pounds. According to the actor, bodybuilding was the vehicle that instilled self-discipline in him, which helped him transition into acting later.
