Jed Johnson was born on 30th December 1948 in Alexandria, Minnesota. He and his twin brother Jay migrated from Sacramento, California, to New York City in 1967. While carrying a message to Andy Warhol's art gallery, The Factory, he met him for the first time.

At the facility, director Paul Morrissey gave Jed unusual duties like mopping the floors and going shopping. With his charming personality and quiet temperament, he quickly became popular among Warhol's friends and staff. As a result, the young man and Warhol had a beautiful romance.

Furthermore, the artist started to employ Jed Johnson as an inspiration for his photographs, and the latter went on to work as an editor for multiple films produced by Andy Warhol Films.

In 1977, Jed helmed the film Bad, which bombed both financially and critically. Per The Andy Warhol Diaries on Netflix, as well as their closest friends, Jed's activities irritated him.

When Valerie Solanas attacked Warhol in June 1968, he narrowly averted death with major injuries and health consequences.

Jed Johnson went into his townhouse with him to tend for him and shared the same bedroom with him. He also redesigned the townhouse and collected statement items and old furnishings to give their property a new vibe.

Jed's efforts on the townhouse furnishings earned him a lot of accolades, so he launched his own interior design company.

In 1978, Jed Johnson met aspiring architect Alan Wanzenberg at the headquarters of legendary designer I.M. Pei, and the two worked on design projects for a variety of high-end clients, notably Warhol friends such as Barbra Streisand, Richard Gere, Mick Jagger, and Jerry Hall.

However, circumstances began to deteriorate at home for Jed and Warhol as the former desired a steady and homey life while the artist lived a more sociable and adventurous lifestyle.

In addition, Warhol befriended artist Victor Hugo and started attending the notorious nightclub Studio 54 with him. Jed despised Victor and the new flashy behaviors he was developing.

The pair's feud to a climax when Jed found a collection of nude polaroids at The Factory, on which Victor and the artist had cooperated with a slew of homosexual male models. Jed stormed out on Warhol, feeling deceived, and declined to reconnect with him for a time.

According to the docuseries, the relationship worsened more over time, and Jed Johnson attempted suicide twice owing to bitter conflicts with his spouse. Warhol attempted to make apologies to him at first, but per Jay Johnson, he eventually became oblivious to Jed's wants and anxieties.

On December 12, 1980, their twelve-year romance ended, and Jed shifted to a new apartment. Both he and Warhol were devastated by the separation and struggled to move on.

Years later, Jed Johnson was a first-class passenger on TWA Flight 800 when it crashed shortly after departure in 1996.
