Andy Warhol's early death in February 1987 left a void in the art world of New York City. It also had a significant impact on his close friend, the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. The two art icons not only worked on paintings over the past half-decade, but they also became close on a personal level.

After his death, much of his fortune went toward establishing a foundation, which currently holds the results of his decades of diligently documenting life.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has been maintaining and restoring his work for over 30 years, as well as discovering new ways to renew it. The foundation donated a large collection of Warhol's photo negatives to Stanford University in 2014 so that they could be digitized, and the outcome has significantly expanded the records of Basquiat and Warhol's intense relationship.
Michael Dayton Hermann is currently the director of licensing at the foundation, where he has worked for over a decade, and he has compiled the diaries and images that tell the tale of their friendship in a new book, Warhol on Basquiat: The Iconic Relationship Told in Andy Warhol’s Words and Pictures.
It also chronicles the parties and meals they had with other celebrities in their orbit, including Bianca Jagger, Madonna, Dolly Parton, Rosanna Arquette, and Whoopi Goldberg, to name a few.
