Cowboy Bebop: Who is the Cosmonaut? Reference Explained!

Fans are wondering who the Cosmonaut is on Netflix's sci-fi drama Cowboy Bebop. Spike and Jet kept saying Faye Valentine looks like the Cosmonaut.

Viewers were seeking Easter eggs and pop culture references in the inaugural season of Cowboy Bebop. However, there is one issue that we have not yet resolved. Spike Spiegel and Jet Black both reckon that Faye Valentine bears a resemblance to the Cosmonaut.

But who is this cosmonaut they keep mentioning? Faye Valentine is presented in the premiere episode, but she doesn't start collaborating with Spike and Jet until Episode 4.

Who is the Cosmonaut on Cowboy Bebop?

In Callisto Soul, Faye faces a bunch of ecoterrorists who sabotage her search for the lady who stole her Identikit. As she looks for the pair's aid, they keep mentioning how much she looks like the Cosmonaut.

The episode concludes without Faye and the viewers realizing who the Cosmonaut is, however she may have been disclosed in the very first episode of Cowboy Bebop.

Spike enters a casino heist, flips a 50-woo coin, and smashes it into terrorist Tanaka. As the penny is flipped over, the inscription that reads "Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space," is unveiled.

Who is the Cosmonaut Spike and Jet Keep Referring To?

It's not 100% certain that Spike and Jet were alluding to the famed Russian astronaut.

However, the fact that Tereshkova appeared on a common coin implies everybody on this side of Mars is familiar with her and can readily relate back to her. It's reasonable to think that Faye is perplexed by the reference given her amnesia.

You may have also spotted the Valentine/Valentina issue, which, while unconfirmed, is a great pun that suits the Cosmonaut reference. The fact that both ladies courageously went on solo missions is also a fantastic connection.

Cowboy Bebop is currently streaming on Netflix.
