August Miklos Friedrich Hermann
Less than two years after marriage, Hargitay and Hermann were gifted with a beautiful baby boy on June 28, 2006. August Miklos Hermann is the first and only biological child of the couple.
The baby was named in consideration of both of their family histories. August - a name in Peter’s family for over 200 years, Miklos is Mariska’s father’s name, and Friedrich was the name of Peter’s paternal grandfather.
Mariska suffered from gestational diabetes in her third semester, which made her pregnancy difficult. The Law & Order actress had always wanted to be pregnant and from the minute she found out, she started wearing maternity pants out of excitement. However, her pregnancy didn't end the way it started.
The actress had to undergo an emergency cesarean section to give birth to August even though she was hoping to give natural birth as August was born a week late.
The actress has shared that being a working mother, she had often missed out on August's life due to it.
Amaya Josephine Hermann
Mariska and Peter had always envisioned having a big household so wanted to expand their family. With her having a difficult pregnancy before and some health issues, the couple decided not to risk it and went the adoption route in 2010.
Going through all the procedures like meeting an adoption lawyer and completing home inspections, they found a mother to give them her baby, who changed her mind at the last moment.
The pair were left heartbroken at that. But, as luck would have it, they were connected with another mother who gave them Amaya. Mariska even helped deliver Amaya on April 7, 2011.
Mariska formed a very emotional and intimate bond with the birth mother in those few moments. After Amaya was born, both the mothers hugged each other for a long time, which was one of the most meaningful moments in Mariska's life.
Andrew Nicholas Hermann
Andrew Nicolas Hermann is Mariska and Peter's miracle. Just a few months after they had adopted Amaya, the couple were alerted by their adoption lawyer of another baby born two months premature that needed a home.
At that time, the new adoptive parents were just getting used to their adopted newborn and were not thinking about another child. But after they learned about the new baby, they impulsively decided to adopt the baby.
They made such a big decision of adopting another child within a span of a few months, in two days. Mariska and Peter named the baby after one of their friends who had recently passed away.
