In my layman's opinion, whether he murdered himself or not, his mental health was not good at all, and was mentally ill. Almost every article about the late John McAfee that has been written in the past ten years has mentioned how crazy he was.
And it's true that McAfee was pretty insane by the end of his life. It would seem that he always had a hint of wackiness, especially when it came to drugs, even though the flavor of his crazy may have altered as he aged.
McAfee's history of mental illness use dates back to the 1960s, according to a Wired profile of him published in December 2012. He was employed by Missouri Pacific Railroad at the time, although he spent most of his time alone in his thoughts.

Additionally, according to the U.S. Justice Department, McAfee's conduct amounted to tax evasion. On behalf of the American government, Spanish police detained him in October 2020. Even though a Spanish judge determined that he may be extradited to the United States to face charges, he was discovered dead in his cell hours later.
John McAfee's wife, Janice McAfee, wrote on Twitter four days before he passed away that his imprisonment had taken a toll on him. She wrote,
These eight months John has spent in prison in Spain have been especially hard on his overall health both mentally and physically, as well as financially, but he is undeterred from continuing to speak truth to power.
Not sure how John McAfee's mental health was, however, it is certain that he didn't always have control of his mind and was struggling with himself in his last days. We can assume his excessive use of drugs led him to lose control over his mind which might be the reason he was involved in so many illegal activities, a murder case, and his cause of death.
