How and When Did John McAfee Die? What Was His Cause of Death? How Old Was the Tech Millionaire When He Was Found Dead?

John McAfee, who was 75 years old at that time, was found dead on June 23, 2021, in a prison cell in the Brians 2 Penitentiary Center outside of Barcelona, Spain. He reportedly died by hanging himself. However, his wife, Janice, does not believe his cause of death to be suicide and has been advocating for an independent autopsy to be conducted on John's remains.

We get an extensive look into John McAfee's true nature, without any filters, thanks to Netflix's Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee, which explores the collapse of the renowned tech pioneer. Thus, it covers a wide range of topics while maintaining an emphasis on his years of hiding out, including his complex network of falsehoods, his manipulation strategies, his personal problems, and his use of drugs.

As shown in the Netflix documentary, John escaped from the US government for several years after being charged with multiple crimes, including a suspect in the death of his neighbor. He was later arrested on 5 October 2020 in Spain at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice. Later, he was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona, Spain.

John McAfee Died on June 23, 2021, and His Cause of Death Was Determined to Be Suicide by Hanging: How Old Was the Tech Millionaire When He Was Found Dead?

On June 23, 2021, John McAfee, 75, was found dead in a prison cell in the Brians 2 Penitentiary Center outside of Barcelona, Spain. He died not long after the Spanish National Court approved his extradition to the United States. His official cause of death was determined to be suicide by hanging.

John McAfee had been hiding out for years prior to his capture. The Netflix documentary follows McAfee as he runs from Belizean police after they suspect him of killing his neighbor. He was later deported to the United States in 2012 after being released by faking a heart attack following his detention for unlawful entry in Guatemala.

John, who lived in the United States and believed taxes were illegal, made the decision to attempt to run for president in 2016 and again in 2020. He had increasingly erratic and paranoid behavior over time, and he frequently thought he was being targeted by the authorities.

John supposedly had a suicide note in his pocket when he was discovered in his prison cell. Everything suggests he committed himself by hanging, according to the Catalan Justice Department, and an official autopsy later confirmed this.

McAfee had the option to oppose his extradition, which eventually required the Cabinet of Spain to give its final consent. But according to Javier Villalba, his Spanish attorney, he could no longer tolerate being imprisoned.

However, John's wife Janice Dyson does not think that he committed suicide and has been advocating for an independent autopsy to be conducted on John's remains since July 2021 to see if the stated cause of death may be disputed or privately examined. His body has been in the care of the Spanish legal system. Janice is requesting that his remains be returned to her.

Janice explained why he didn't seem suicidal when they last spoke:

His last words to me were 'I love you and I will call you in the evening.’ Those words are not words of somebody who is suicidal.

Additionally, she also brought up a tattoo that John had gotten two years before he passed away. He had tweeted about the tattoo, saying, “I got a tattoo today just in case. If I suicide myself, I didn't. I was whackd. Check my right arm.”

Before leaving, find out what went wrong with John McAfee and Janice Dyson's net worth.
