Camila Mendes is nostalgic about her brief time living in Brazil, which offered her the chance to be with her extended family, even though they finally settled down in South Florida during Mendes' middle school years. In an interview with W magazine, she told,
I do really get sad because my entire extended family is in Brazil, and they’re all hanging out with each other every day and they have such a sense of family and community. When I was living there that was nice. Brazilians value family so much.

I’m grateful for how these two cultures shaped who I am. Although I am a Brazilian by blood and have a large Brazilian extended family, I was born and reared in the United States. When I visit Brazil, I feel like an American, and when I return to the United States, I am reminded of the characteristics that distinguish me as a Brazilian.
