Late President, Ronald Reagan’s daughter Patti Davis recently discussed uncovered statements in which her father referred to African delegates as "monkeys." On February 8, she wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post in which she stated that, while there is no defense, justification, or appropriate explanation for what he said, she believes if he were living today, he would ask forgiveness for the statements.

The recording, released this week, shows Reagan conversing with then-President Richard Nixon about a United Nations vote to recognize the People's Republic of China. He expressed his displeasure with the Tanzanian delegation for dancing after the country was seated. He told Nixon, laughing,
To see those, those monkeys from those African countries — damn them, they’re still uncomfortable wearing shoes!
In her op-ed, Patti Davis highlighted how she never saw that side of her father. She described her father holding her in his arms and telling her that God created everything in different colors. It would be quite dull if we all looked the same. She also told how her father refused to join an all-white country club and, as a college football player, declined to stay at a hotel for whites only, instead taking the black players to his parents' home. She wrote,
I can tell you all these things, and more, but it doesn’t remove the knife cut of the words I heard him say on that tape. That wound will stay with me forever. But I believe, if my father had, years after the fact, heard that tape, he would have asked for forgiveness. He would have sought to make amends for the pain his words caused.
