As if that weren't enough, a judge further ordered him to pay (together with his two co-conspirators) another $233,317 in compensation, but this time it was to the NBA for clearly defrauding them.
Tim Donaghy was freed from prison on November 4, 2009, on the condition that he completes three years of probation; hence, he didn't truly become a free man until 2012. According to what we can gather, he has now been able to rebuild a happy life for himself, but it has mainly been via accepting his past with open arms, even if he freely acknowledges his sorrow.
In the Netflix documentary, Tim Donaghy admitted,
I think I’d be lying if I said I wish I wasn’t still running up and down the floor with the greatest athletes in the world. A lot of these guys that I officiated with, I felt like they were great friends, and it is difficult knowing it’s something I kind of threw away. You know, you wish you were still there.
While imprisoned, Tim actually released a book titled Blowing the Whistle: The Culture of Fraud in the NBA and established the now-defunct website RefPicks (2013), which offered sports betting. The convicted official has gone so far as to become a public speaker to share not only his knowledge of sports and his gambling exploits, but also how the latter tore him apart.
Before accepting the offer to officiate a professional wrestling match for Major League Wrestling (MLW) in 2021, Tim Donaghy also worked in a gambling treatment facility. Since his stay was allegedly warmly welcomed, the father of four might come back here in the future, but in the meantime, he mostly relies on real estate assets to support his business.
Additionally, in an interview with Tampa Bay Times, he admitted that he is aware of his mistakes and does not want to hide his doings. He explained,
I certainly am not shying away from the fact that I made some mistakes and I made some poor choices. It is what it is, and unfortunately, I have to live with it… The whole situation is close to probably 10 years behind me now. I’m fortunate that I have a good family and good friends that have supported me. Things couldn’t be better.
