How Much Time Did Tim Donaghy Spend in Jail? Where Is the NBA Referee Today? Netflix Documentary Update!

Tim Donaghy received 15 months of jail time after he pled guilty to getting involved in betting/gambling. The NBA referee also was charged with multiple monetary penalties for his doings. He was freed from prison on November 4, 2009, and was kept on probation for 3 years. As of today, Tim is a real estate agent and is open to speaking about his mistakes, just like in the Netflix documentary.

Tim Donaghy's NBA betting scandal made headlines more than 15 years ago. Now that a Netflix documentary is available, Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul is probably going to rank among the most popular shows on the platform this month. For his role in the NBA betting scandal, the former NBA referee, who admitted to betting on games, pled guilty in 2008 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and disclosing wagering information to third parties.

We learn a lot about this entire astounding scandal from the Netflix series. This is because it thoroughly examines whether he even fixed the matches by including not only the statements of individuals who were directly involved and law enforcement officials but also archival footage.

Tim Donaghy admitted his guilt in 2007 immediately after FBI agents started an investigation on his doings. Of course, he was sent to jail. As many of you were confused about his sentence, here is everything we know about what happened after he was found guilty. Let's get started.

Tim Donaghy Was Sentenced a 15 Months Jail Time as Well as Other Monetary Penalties: Where Is the NBA Referee Today? Netflix Documentary Update!

Tim Donaghy received a 15-month jail term in Pensacola, Florida, a $500,000 fine, and a requirement to pay at least $30,000 in restitution to the government in 2008 after he was found guilty of gambling on his own games for at least a year to not just satisfy his addiction but also benefit his two co-conspirators.

As if that weren't enough, a judge further ordered him to pay (together with his two co-conspirators) another $233,317 in compensation, but this time it was to the NBA for clearly defrauding them.

Tim Donaghy was freed from prison on November 4, 2009, on the condition that he completes three years of probation; hence, he didn't truly become a free man until 2012. According to what we can gather, he has now been able to rebuild a happy life for himself, but it has mainly been via accepting his past with open arms, even if he freely acknowledges his sorrow.

In the Netflix documentary, Tim Donaghy admitted,

I think I’d be lying if I said I wish I wasn’t still running up and down the floor with the greatest athletes in the world. A lot of these guys that I officiated with, I felt like they were great friends, and it is difficult knowing it’s something I kind of threw away. You know, you wish you were still there.

While imprisoned, Tim actually released a book titled Blowing the Whistle: The Culture of Fraud in the NBA and established the now-defunct website RefPicks (2013), which offered sports betting. The convicted official has gone so far as to become a public speaker to share not only his knowledge of sports and his gambling exploits, but also how the latter tore him apart.

Before accepting the offer to officiate a professional wrestling match for Major League Wrestling (MLW) in 2021, Tim Donaghy also worked in a gambling treatment facility. Since his stay was allegedly warmly welcomed, the father of four might come back here in the future, but in the meantime, he mostly relies on real estate assets to support his business.

Additionally, in an interview with Tampa Bay Times, he admitted that he is aware of his mistakes and does not want to hide his doings. He explained,

I certainly am not shying away from the fact that I made some mistakes and I made some poor choices. It is what it is, and unfortunately, I have to live with it… The whole situation is close to probably 10 years behind me now. I’m fortunate that I have a good family and good friends that have supported me. Things couldn’t be better.

Before leaving, find out if Scott Foster was really involved with Tim Donaghy.
