The Umbrella Academy, a Netflix original series, is based on the comic book series written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Ba. The show finds creative ways to integrate crucial components of the comics despite taking many liberties and changing a lot of the plot to adapt it for the screen.

The Hotel Oblivion plotline serves as the idea for the third season, which includes a few elements that comic book enthusiasts will enjoy despite some significant modifications to the main plot.

Is Klaus Hargreeves Gay in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy? Was the LGBT Character Straight in the Original Comic? Discussion About His Gender!

One of the 43 children delivered on the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989 to mothers who had not previously shown any signs of pregnancy was Klaus Hargreeves, originally known as Number 4.

The baby was one of seven adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves who intended to raise them as world-saving heroes. Klaus was Hargreeves' Number Four with the power to communicate to the dead, ranked by their unique value. When Five was unable to stop the end of the world, Klaus found himself being transported to Dallas, on February 11, 1960.

Despite the notoriety that came with becoming the leader of a spiritual cult, Klaus struggled more and more with his inner demons. Ben and he had a difficult relationship, but they started to experiment more with their combined skills.

Klaus is a lanky, tall man. He frequently dresses up in more glamorous clothes, including Allison's skirts. He appears to have discarded his large black feather coat after seeing the Vietnam War and is now wearing a military jacket. Furthermore, his sexuality has been something many viewers are really curious to know about.

Initially, Klaus told Five about his longest relationship, which involved a male. He corrects Diego after he tells him about the person he loved and Diego initially thinks Klaus was talking about a woman. This suggests that he wasn't close to his sibling or, at the very least, that he never came out to them about his sexuality.

Klaus discovers a younger version of his boyfriend, Dave, before they got together while living in the 1960s. Dave's uncle refers to him as a queer and makes Dave punch him for it.

In an interview, Robert Sheehan (@rozzymikes), who plays the role of Klaus, explained that his role was rewritten to be gay after he was cast. He also said he considered his character as pansexual than a gay person. He explained,

"Klaus is not necessarily a man, he's kind of just this creature that's not bound by traditional societal norms like 'man', 'woman', 'masculinity', 'femininity'. He just sort of… is."

Despite the characters in the show solely referring to their characters by he/him pronouns, Sheehan also uses both he/him and they/them pronouns to refer to his character.

Furthermore, Reddit users discussed if Klaus is gay or bisexual. Questioning his sexuality, one user wrote, "Klaus mentioned having a 3 week relationship with a guy in the beginning, and is show having a relationship with the Vietnam Vet, but in Allison’s flashback story is shown romancing a female ghost."

Similarly, another Reddit user replied, "Also, a girl approaches him in the Vietnam night club and he looks happy about it. I think he's open to anything but perhaps leaning towards guys."

We're uncertain if he is gay, bisexual, or pansexual. However, Klaus is definitely not straight. Therefore, we still have to stay tuned for the upcoming seasons to confirm his sexuality.
