Lester Pocket makes a strange flourish that is typical of this show as he travels across America with his collection of recordings that have unusual noises on them. But he is more complex than first appears. He begins following the Umbrella Academy members and eventually saves them from the Sparrows by unleashing a powerful energy wave that kills Jayme and Alphonso.
Lester Pocket is actually grown-up Harlan Cooper from Season 2. In case you forgot, Sissy Cooper, the person Viktor was romantically connected with when the Umbrella Academy traveled back to 1963, was the mother of Harlan, a non-verbal autistic child. Viktor met Sissy when he traveled back in time to the 1960s.
Viktor saves Harlan from drowning in a lake by giving some of his power to him. But towards the conclusion of the season, it becomes obvious that Harlan is unable to control his power the way Viktor can.
Harlan hears Viktor and his mother arguing in Season 2, at which point he leaves the house. Harlan had already drowned in a lake by the time Viktor came across him. Viktor performs CPR on him to revive him, but this also gives him part of Viktor's abilities. Later, Viktor makes an attempt to regain these abilities, but towards the end of the season, we learn that he has been unsuccessful.
Lester Pocket subsequently receives the tapes, which makes sense given that he obtained his abilities from Viktor because his abilities also depend on him being in contact to sound.
Harlan has control of his abilities by the time he is living as Lester Pocket, but it wasn't always like that. For instance, after deflecting a shotgun shell into his father's chest, he murdered him.
In reality, the parallel timeline is the result of his lack of control over his abilities. Harlan releases energy in his sadness when his mother passes away from cancer in 1989, an energy that is potent enough to murder many of the moms of the superpowered children who were all born on the same day.
Since Harlan mistakenly killed their mother before they could give birth, this explains why the majority of the Umbrella Academy does not exist in the Season 3 timeline.
As mentioned earlier, Lester has been following the Umbrella Academy in the parallel reality, thus he will be present when they face the Sparrow Academy. He is able to use a burst of energy to kill the Sparrows Jayme and Alphonso while still protecting the former group.
Lester/powers Harlan's are ultimately destroyed by Viktor, but it is too late to save Harlan. In exchange for giving the Sparrows Harlan, the Umbrellas agree to give up their time-traveling suitcase. However, in vengeance for Harlan killing her mother, Allison, kills him.
Callum Keith Rennie is the actor that portrays Lester Pocket in season 3 of The Umbrella Academy. The 61-year-old Canadian actor, who was born in Sunderland, North East England, has been a regular on our screens since making his debut in 1993, appearing in the film Purple Toast and the series Highlander. Rennie has played more than 130 parts in movies and television shows throughout the course of his nearly 30-year career.
