Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies, and the Internet, a new Netflix series about the Internet and the horrifying things people do on it, as well as how those horrifying things tend to burst over into real life, was released this week. It's a six-part series with each episode lasting around an hour.

The six-episode series, which premiered on June 15, covers some familiar subjects and occasionally falls into cliche, but it's nonetheless eye-opening. Brian Knappenberger, who previously directed the documentaries The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz and We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists, created the series, with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer working as executive producers.

The second episode of the show titled, A Murder in D.C. Transcript, shows the story of Seth Rich who was murdered after getting shot twice in the back. Police stated that the incident occurred during a robbery attempt, however, a lot of conspiracy theories appeared after his death. Similarly, Kevin Doherty was somehow involved with the case. But how? Who actually is Kevin Doherty? Let's find it out right below.

Who Is Kevin Doherty in Netflix’s Web of Make Believe? Why Did Jack Burkman Hire Him? How Did He Help in Seth Rich’s Murder Case?

According to NPR, Seth Rich was a 27-year-old Omaha man working at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in July 2016. Rich went drinking at Lou's City Bar, his favorite hangout spot in Washington, D.C., on the night of July 9 and early on the morning of July 10.

Seth decided to walk the 40 minutes home after being rather tipsy. At around 4:20 a.m., two males grabbed him after he got off the phone with his girlfriend. Rich resisted, and he was shot multiple times. He died in the hospital a few hours later.

Despite the fact that the attackers were never identified, authorities were certain that this was simply a robbery gone wrong. What should have been a straightforward case of a terrible robbery turned into many conspiracy theories, including involvement in diverting attention away from Donald Trump and putting pressure on Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Another theory also started revolving around the internet. Jack Burkman, a lobbyist for the Republicans, revealed that he had proof that proved the Russians murdered Seth as he knew about their role in the DNC email leaks. Jack went on to claim that he received this information from a retired US intelligence official and that the attempted robbery was not a realistic idea. Following that, Seth's family began to separate themselves from Jack.

Lorraine was offered money to accuse Robert of sexual assault, according to an email sent in October 2020. On the other hand, Lorraine's identification was not confirmed. Aside from that, Jack accused Supreme Court Justice John Roberts of drug usage but gave no evidence.

To continue Jack's involvement in Seth's case, he hired Kevin Doherty, a former Marine, to create a psychological profile of Seth's killer. However, after a series of disagreements, Jack fired Kevin in July 2017. In the Netflix documentary, Jack stated,

"Little did I know, Kevin Doherty's sitting over there with some kind of M1 rifle, ready to blow my head off. The only reason I'm here alive today is because of my little dog, Jackie the dachshund. He didn't think it was me, because I wasn't in a suit. I was all messed up, and I had the dog pressed to my face. He pulled the rifle back. That's the only thing that saved me."

Kevin Doherty then started emailing Jack, claiming to have information that was harmful to the FBI. Kevin persuaded Jack to a parking lot garage in March 2018 under the premise of delivering paperwork. He did, however, shoot Jack twice before colliding with him and fleeing the scene.
