Grace and Frankie Ending Explained: Does Frankie Die at the End of the Netflix Show?

Grace finally lays a lot of her old demons to rest in the final episodes. Starting with her recently divorced husband Nick, who has written a memoir on his time as a criminal. While she is first devastated, it quickly becomes clear that he was the most harmed by their time together, compared to his prior marriages and illegal misdoings. They go their own ways after sleeping together one more time.

Later, she tries to revive Rise Up toilet seats, but Frankie is nowhere to be found. The Japanese businesspeople admire her, but they want her to join them for a night of singing and sake drinking. Grace feels apprehensive about doing it without Frankie. She eventually declines, humiliating her potential business partner and sabotaging their deal.

On the other hand, Frankie spends a large portion of her time certain that she will die within a week and so goes out of her way to leave her mark on the world. She then throws a make-believe funeral so she can be present while still living, during which everyone is required to give a 12-minute eulogy.

However, Frankie becomes furious when Grace's name is used in every speech, making her feel like a sidekick in her own life, and walks out. Frankie soon becomes unable to grasp a paintbrush or chopsticks as her arthritis worsens. No one appears to be able to get her out of her gloomy attitude, as she feels diminished and worthless.

Their rage erupts during Coyote and Jessica's fake wedding, and Frankie breaks down, stating she can't paint anymore and is afraid of becoming even sicker. When Frankie's microphone interacts with the vodka martini Grace was drinking, the two get electrocuted in the fight.

On their way to heaven, the two meet God, who happens to be Dolly Parton. Even in the afterlife, they can't live without each other, so they try to negotiate their return to Earth together.

Grace comes to Earth, while Frankie is told to stay in heaven. They exchange a heartbreakingly emotional goodbye. Dolly is moved by their bond and agrees to let them both return together. Grace later holds Frankie's hand as she continues to paint, and she takes a picture of the two of them playing on the beach.

Talking about fans' queries, yes, Frankie dies in the end alongside Grace and was almost kept in heaven. However, their emotional goodbye compels Dolly to send them back to earth. And the season ends as they walk along the beach, arm in arm, towards the sunset.
