Where is Young Wallander Filmed? Netflix Filming Locations Explored!

The majority of Young Wallander Season 2 is filmed in Vilnius, Lithuania's capital, in the same filming locations as Season 1. A few days were dispensed to filming in Malmo's Rosengrd housing area in Sweden. Fans wonder what year Young Wallander is set and where the Netflix series is supposed to take place. Malin Lindholm, the series' production designer, determined that Lithuania would play the role of southern Sweden in the series.

Young Wallander is a criminal drama series based on Henning Mankell's fictitious Inspector Kurt Wallander. The series premiered on Netflix on September 3, 2020.

Adam Plsson suggested that a pre-imagining (i.e., Young Wallander set in the current day) was preferable to a straight prequel since it allowed for the societal critique that Mankell's original Wallander was known for.

The decision to set the series in the present day has been critiqued in several reviews. In November 2020, the series was revived for a second season, and Killer's Shadow premiered on Netflix on February 17, 2022.

It follows the personal and professional life of the titular character, a 20-year-old officer assigned to the local police department, as he seeks to investigate a heinous crime on the instructions of his superior Hemberg.

Kurt's famed investigative skills are placed on display on Young Wallander when he is promoted to detective, but he must also deal with the shame and misery of the cases he failed to solve before it was too late.

Previously, we touched on Ceara Coveney, Arturas Cerkauskas, and Kim Adis.

Where is Young Wallander Filmed?

Apart from Adam Plsson's remarkable performance, Young Wallander has received praise for daring to address contemporary themes like immigration, human trafficking, and violent gang crimes, all of which are widespread in modern-day Sweden.

The main filming for the series started in late 2018 and finished a year later, in late 2019. Here's the filming location of the series.

Vilnius The Capital Of Lithuania

Young Wallander was primarily filmed in Vilnius, Lithuania's capital, in the country's south-eastern region.

Vilnius was chosen as the filming location because of its diversified landscapes, cobblestoned streets, and baroque buildings, according to production designer Malin Lindholm.

All of the above characteristics combine to provide the ideal setting for modern Sweden.

Only two days were allocated to filming in Malmö's Rosengrd housing area, where Kurt lives. Vilnius acts as a stand-in for the city in southern Sweden throughout the rest of the series. Malin transformed an abandoned jail into The Cube for the first season's nightclub segment, which he filmed with 380 extras.

In 1977, the Soviet authorities built the Šeškinė residential area in Vilnius' northwest sector. While seeking locations that matched the rawness and authenticity necessary to depict Kurt's journey, the site manager came upon Šeškinė, and one of the flats in the area ended up serving as Kurt's apartment in the series.

According to Young Wallander's creators, Vilnius has a great reputation as a film-friendly city with enormous cinematic potential. In addition, the city boasts a varied spectrum of landscape and scenery, as well as a good local workforce.

With a range of intriguing sites ranging from mournful dark alleyways and dilapidated jails to fashionable cafés, it delivers the creators' desired wide-ranging aspect and atmosphere.

The cityscape in the series is recognizable since it was used as a filming location in the films such as Chernobyl, Tokyo Trial, and The Last Czars. Vilnius is regarded as a filming-friendly city by filmmakers all over the world due to its magnificent settings and vast pool of professional human resources.

Old Town, one of Northern Europe's largest surviving medieval old towns, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Šeškinė

Young Wallander's best choice turned out to be Šeškinė, because the buildings are historically diverse and incredibly dramatic, with a range of filming views and creative options. The word "Šeškinė" first appears in written records in the 14th century.

From the 16th through the 19th centuries, the Radzwills, or Radvilos, a well-known aristocratic family in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, controlled the property, which was initially a community with dispersed wooden buildings.

Traditionally, Šeškinė has been known for the hills that surround it, which were historically used as natural barriers to protect Vilnius' territory. The area has seen battles between crusaders, Russians, Swedes, French, and others, as well as the 1794 Kociuszko Uprising.

The neighborhood is notable for its varied design, which includes Soviet-style apartment buildings, red-brick buildings, a contemporary church, and modern workplaces.

It also includes one of the largest shopping malls in Eastern Europe, a water park, and a sculpture park in a neighboring woodland designed by well-known Lithuanian artist Mykolas Sauka.

Young Wallander is currently streaming on Netflix.
